El Centro (14th St)

T here, everyone who knows me, knows I’m picky about my drinks, but El Centro’s margaritas are so yummy I forget that they have tequila in them. Although they taste sweet and refreshing, they are chock-full of alcohol so make sure you keep that in mind as you’re sipping (or chugging). After two I was shocked I felt a little ~tipsy~. They have a plain margarita, as well as ELEVEN infused flavors. My personal favorite is the grilled pineapple, although E is more enchanted with the strawberry & basil or the watermelon. Oh, and did I mention they are $5 each during happy hour?! Literally a steal.

One of the key elements of Happy Hour is a snack. And this is where El Centro shines. At Happy Hour I feel like it is a little bit easy to get carried away (in a good way), so it’s always nice to make sure you’re balancing yourself with something to munch on. Whether or not you sit at a table or order food, El Centro provides BOTTOMLESS CHIPS (and sales)! Speaking of food, they also have a decent array of Mexican-inspired bar food at fair prices. While the other food is nothing to write home about, it gets the job done. Their star is the margs (and super cheap beer).

If you do order food/drinks, the service is pretty quick and efficient (better at the bar than tables). The upstairs bar at their 14th location, in particular, moves like a well-oiled machine during happy hour. To be honest, we don’t spend much time downstairs. The downstiars is more ‘restaurant’ while the upstairs is more ‘bar’.

It’s important to note that shortly after 5:30pm until about 6pm the bar starts to fill up. If you’re looking to snag a table or go with a group, try to have at least one member of your party arrive before then. It’s pretty easy to save seats as long as you arrive before 5:45pm.

Although margs aren’t the only happy hour special – beer & wine is also $5. Oh, and want an insider tip? Taco Tuesday (one of the best days of the week) is a thing here. It isn’t on the menu, but you can get tacos for $2 a piece if you ask for it – just make sure to let your server know you want the $2 taco Tuesday special and they’ll be happy to oblige.
